Robertson Creek Hatchery
The Robertson Creek Hatchery is home to all of the fish that have negotiated their way through the large fish ladder located in Stamp River Provincial Park. It's just a 15 minute drive from The Hummingbird. Take the Great Central Lake Turnoff from Hwy 4.
The hatchery started off small in the early 1960s and has slowly but steadily grown over the years. Now the hatchery produces 8 million chinook smolts, 1 million coho smolts and 180,000 steelhead smolts each year.
The process is an amazing one, which you can see first hand during one of the hatchery tours. You'll have the opportunity to view rearing tanks and ponds all year round.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting the hatchery in the fall, there is an underwater viewing area where you can get up close and personal with the fish. However, if you are looking to see the salmon scale the ladder you should plan a trip for August. You may glimpse a bear along the shore snaring a salmon for dinner so be on the lookout. And there will be electrified temporary fencing as staff try to keep the bears from the salmon in the pens.
